Short-Term Stay After Hospital Admission
Patients that have been admitted to a hospital for a minimum of three nights may have the option for a short-term stay in our center to receive 24-hour Nursing care and Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy up to seven-days each week. Patients may also request a short-term Respite in-patient stay for periods of a few days to several months.

Above is a a direct quote from another individual, which mirrors my own experiences. I have personally attempted to address these issues with the director, Ms. Hanna McIntyre, NHA. However, despite my best efforts our discussion was not only unproductive but were abruptly ended when she hung up on me.
These concerns are not mine alone; they are echoed by others who have shared similar experiences. These matters are not only deeply troubling but also raise questions about the quality of care provided to residents during vulnerable times. I strongly believe that these concerns warrant the attention of someone who oversees the director of SunnyBrook Rehabilitation Center as immediate action is needed to ensure that residents are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
Please advise me on who to contact to escalate this matter. I appreciate your time and assistance in addressing these serious concerns.

[review] => My grandma was discharged from this facility today. Although I did not visit due to her short time there (1 week) and my work schedule, my mother had visited everyday. Both my mom and grandma had nothing but good things to say. The staff was attentive and caring. Always smiling. I wanted to specifically say that a nurse assistant named Sherri was stellar. Also Carrie , Dwayne and Jerome. Not only is it rare to find a good place like this, but to even find one good employee. Here there were many. Also my grandma couldn't stop talking about the food. Don't let this place fool you by the looks. My mom said that it looks old and that worried her at first. But it was clean and cared for. Just aging. Do consider this hospital. Awesome work everyone!!!

[review] => I cannot say enough nice words about my stay here at Sunnybrook. The ladies and men who made sure I was clean and comfortable were wonderful. My meals were very good, tasted like my home cooking and not institutionalized cooking. Rehab personnel were unbelievable, they had a way of convincing me I could do anything I set my mind to and, guess what, I did it. Everyone had a smile for you, no matter you were doing. I have been in two other rehab facilities in Maryland and Sunnybrook puts them to shame in every category. Keep up the good work. I apologize, it's been a few weeks) Duane from the PT dept, De'sember, nurse K. There are others of course that were also amazing. There were some experiences not so great. My Father tells me after dark it turns into a horror story. No one answers a bell, waiting for hours (read daylight) for someone to help you get to the bathroom or bring you meds. He is now a permanent resident by choice as we are highly satisfied with the level of care he receives for his Parkinson's with dementia condition. The staff is approachable, friendly, and caring. From the CNAs to the nurses, along with the therapists, kitchen crew, and other support staff, we know that the environment is strong. Unable to care or advocate for herself, my mother was hospitalized twice and our family thought for sure her days were numbered. Certainly, her quality of life was at rock bottom.
When my sister and I found Sunnybrook Rehabilitation Center in Raleigh, we found an incredibly talented and loving staff and administration that cares for my mother with compassion, sensitivity, and professionalism.
We appreciate all the attention the administrative staff gave us in helping my mom transfer to Sunnybrook. And once she was transferred, we've been nothing but amazed.
While my mother's dementia is irreversible, her quality of life has continued to improve each and everyday. She loves the attention she gets from the wonderful staff at Sunnybrook. I should also add that she loves the food.

[review] => The positives fall short of the negatives.
While this Sunnybrook rehab facility has some positive aspects, our experience also uncovered significant shortcomings that warrant caution for prospective patients and their families. On the positive side, several nurses, notably Lou and Nikkia, exhibited exceptional kindness, and many members of the physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) teams provided excellent care. The speech therapist, Megan, was also a welcome pleasure to work with.
However, our optimism waned when nighttime descended upon Sunnybrook and supervision dwindled. Here are just a few troubling incidents we encountered:
1. One evening, our loved one’s oxygen tank malfunctioned, posing a serious health risk. Despite immediate notification, the response was delayed until morning, resulting in a dangerous drop in his blood oxygen levels.
2. On another occasion, our loved one’s simple request for water was callously dismissed by an aide who unkindly suggested he didn’t really need it, leaving him parched through the night.
3. Basic needs, such as timely assistance with the call button or addressing soiled bedding, were routinely neglected, often for hours at a time, leaving our loved one in discomfort for prolonged periods.
4. Attention to and treatment for wounds which our loved one developed was delayed for three days, leading to unnecessary deterioration of his health.
5. Shockingly, our loved one was informed by staff that his calls for assistance would be ignored, and he was made to feel unwelcome.
6. Witnessing nursing staff neglecting their duties to indulge in personal activities such as watching television, scrolling through their personal phones or painting their nails while patients awaited assistance was disheartening and concerning, and an unfortunate symptom of the lack of effective leadership on the night shift.
7. When these concerns were raised with the Director of Nursing, Jennifer, her defensive response and refusal to acknowledge the issues reflected a lack of accountability and oversight within the facility.
Ultimately, our loved one’s condition worsened during his stay at Sunnybrook, prompting us to seek alternative care. While we cannot rectify the facility's myriad issues, we feel compelled to caution others based on our firsthand experience. Sunnybrook's deficiencies in patient care and management, some of which were arguably clear cases of elder abuse and neglect, should give anyone pause before entrusting a loved one to their care.

[review] => The rehab staff at Sunny Brook is top notch however I can’t say a lot for the remaining staff. For one, I kept receiving the same breakfast with the variation of either toast or a biscuit and never any breakfast meat. I told the staff I don’t eat pork however there is turkey and beef sausages.
Then there was the nurse that accused me of calling someone and reporting her.👀 I’m like call who and what are you talking about?! Her Supervisor apologized the following morning but no resident should have to deal with a nurses misplaced anger.
Then there’s the fact that the communication is poor! One day my meds was every four hours then every six hours however it didn’t matter. Often I was given medication as the nurse came down the line instead of every 4 or 6 hours. The purpose was to stay ahead of my pain instead of waiting for it to hit 10! Some nurses were understanding and johnny on the spot while others couldn’t care less.
I had to ask that my bed was changed, asked for toilet paper since I had a bedside commode and never received any. Next best thing was the bathroom wipes I had from the hospital; threw them in the trash for disposal.
And of course no one considers that my toe is changing colors and getting worse. Instead you’re wrapping it every day. When I discharged myself, returning to the hospital, I am told I have gangrene in that toe that you looked at every day😡
I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone until they provide staff training on communication, organization and understanding the needs and differences from your long term patients versus your short term. Even after I left, I had friends that went there looking for me only to be given three different rooms or told I went home. Again a lack or communication.

[review] => Revised review after a month: I came here after the hospital. It was difficult to get used to the lack of staff this year- difficult everywhere I think.
The cook (Dave) here has been outstanding honoring my allergies and providing excellent and unique options. And his assistant has watched over my food with care and kindness that can’t be beat.
The PT and OT staff are brilliant and creative! They helped me walk again. Really really great people, all of them.
Despite the current lack of nurses (and they are hiring more ) these are trying harder and very nice warm and friendly.
After a month the main issue here is lack of communication so that information does not get conveyed between shifts like- allergies from one cook to another: the weekend cook did not understand that the only meat I was allergic to was turkey and wishing to serve me well was trying to figure out what to serve me unable to think of anything except pasta. He did not understand I could eat anything else. Good people good intentions but no communication.

Sometimes I'll lay in my bed and wait for complete silence before falling asleep. In the mean time I hear Nurses and Nurse Aid taking care of patients as they have dealt with me. They have the sweetest spirit when dealing with us. They always remain calm. I don't want to start naming names out of fear of leaving a name out by mistake.
I met lots of other staff members here and they too were nothing but pleasant. The PT and OT staff I think I fell in love with them just by our first conversations. Simply amazing people that are here with love in what they do to help patients. Bottom line, I felt and heard much love here. Thank you Sunnybrook Rehab Center.

I was amazed at the young lady that was taking care of my Aunt she is by far one of the best Cna’s I’ve seen working at this facility . Her name is Fatima she’s very professional and I can tell she is an experienced cna who actually has a heart and cares about her patients not only my aunt but the other residents that I saw her assist as well . I have no clue where she came from but she is an angel I truly hope she stays employed at Sunnybrook. I haven’t seen many like her some of the others have no care and they show it. The fact that my Auntie hair was combed she smelled good was dressed in actual clothes and wasn’t soiled was a plus for me . The food is always a plus for me because my Aunt loves it and she’s a hard lady to please with meals. The facility could use some remodeling . If we could have Fatima everyday then I think we would be blessed. My Aunt talked so well about her . The administrator should make sure she is definitely recognized. [review] => If you want your love one dead so you can get the inheritance, this is the place. Grandfather didn’t stay there for a year and got stage 4 Nicolet, the best part they said he was fine when his daughter went to see him unresponsive. After that it only took 16 days for him to pass in the hospital. Went to get his stuff the day he passed and couldn’t find anything, no one knew where his stuff were, oh and also when he was there he was wearing someone else’s clothes that was was too small and lost he’s brand new clothes that his children bought for him.
So if you want them gone soon as possible this is the place to send them too.
But obviously we didn’t want this to happen and now my grandfather is gone and I will never forgive this place for what they have done.

My mom suffered a stroke and lost her ability to speak and use of her right hand, Once she was medically cleared for discharge, she was recommended to go to rehab for speech/physical and occupational thearpy. The Case Manager at WakeMed claimed Sunnybrook Rehab Facility was a 5 star. ALL LIES!!! My mom was transferred in the evening and i arrived the next day at approximately 8:30 am. It took about 10 minutes before anyone came to the door to let me in. Once in, the nightmare began. the hallway smelled of urine and the place is old and dreary looking. I walked in and there were 3 staff workers sitting at the desk on their phones. No one botherd to ask me who I was. After standing at the desk for 3-4 minutes, i asked them for my mom's room. First i was told that she wasn't there, then another worker said "Oh wait, I see her name on the board." I went to my mom's room and she was lying in a small twin bed. The room was dingy and dreary looking. I wanted to cry seeing my mom lying in the bed and wet. I looked for her nurse who was even more clueless and didn't seem to be interested in anything I was asking him. He told me that my mom ate really good this morning and fed herself. I was shocked that he said this because my mom was unable to use her right hand to eat since the stroke. When i asked this nurse are you sure you have the right patient, he was adamant insisting my mom fed herself. He came into her room while the OT was there assessing my mom's mobility . He immediately walked out. This place is horrible! I feel really bad for the patients that don't have family members checking in with them on a daily basis. I'm able to get to this place early and have witnessed no staff checking on the patients during the day. The CNA who came into my mom's bedroom this morning, only came in because she saw me. She came in and bathe my mom and clothed her. She took the linen off the bed and stated that she would be back with clean linen to make mom's bed up. Never saw her again that day!!!! DO Y0UR HOMEWORK!!! DON'T BELIEVE WHAT WAKE MED CASE WORKER TELLS YOU (AMY) YES I'M PUTTING HER ON BLAST ALSO!!! AWEFUL PLACE FOR YOUR LOVED ONE!!! BTW, I Never saw any activities going on and the staff is horrible.

[review] => This is by far the worst experience my mother ever had in rehab. She was helpless and in fear while she was there. I knew in my heart that the place was sub par the minute she got there. She slept in her clothes. She lost over 20 pounds. Rehab came in on average once a day. Either OT or PT. They left her in bed until after lunch. Her bed kept breaking. She had soiled sheets and pillow case for days. She definitely did not thrive there. I went every day. Spoke to everyone. Had to request a healthcare meeting as they don’t do this, I was told. When I asked about nutrition and requested that they give her Ensure for calories, they told me to bring in food for her that she likes and that they would put her on supplements. She just could not eat. I’d been bringing food in for a week. They never did give her supplements. I moved her. She’s thriving where she is now.
Update. Sunnybrook posted that they would like to reach out to me. I sent them my email. Never heard from them. I think this says a lot about this facility. They have no interest in improving their poor quality of care.

Administration put moms money on the account, but kept it. Her pictures, wedding ring that was stuck on her hand was stolen. I don't know how they got it off. He cell phone was taken, they won't give land lines, insist on cell phones, then they are stolen. I bought special drinks and food, as the kitchen food was so bad. The food I bought disappeared, she never recieved it. It was to be signed out as she had lost weight, and was keeping track of what she tolerated or that's what I was told. But someone else got her good.

The staff Refused to help my mom with her needs, she aspirated, i reached out to the entire building that day I requested help for her, every extension I called Refused to come to her aid.
Initially I was talking to my mother, she had aspirated, she had been pleaded for help had her call light on, I used my second cell phone called multiple staff ,administration, I was Refused and austrasized for calling, I request someone to check on mom or help her. I was told the nurse was busy. I could hear her trying to breath with a high pitched squeak, I eventually exhausted all options for help from this facility, i finally called 911, mom was squeaking with each breath, then I could no longer hear her, voice or attempts to breath. I begged ems to hurry 911 said the team was coming, at the facility still no one answered her light. Then 911said ems is in the facility, I continued to hear moms occasional effort, ems came in as the staff finally responded behind them. Mom needed to be resuscitated, chest compressions,, and intubated, I.V.s transported to the emergency room, she wanted to live, she tried hard, she was ignored, and the hospital was not much better.

finally was able to visit her, I found an unkempt, dirty hair,, long facial hair her nails were long, broken, unbathed, feces under her nails, bed sores, bruises, her watch band filled with dried fecal material, legs, feet toes, toenails, dirty from no baths or skin care, toenails broken, her nail which would need attention or would become ingrown, had grown into the skin soft tissue of the great toe , skin reddenswollen, oozing pale white/yellow drainage, she had pain from this and chronic back pain , and pain from being dropped at this facility on the bed rail while transferring. . she later died from the lack of response to her needs this day,, but also the attention to her needs of diet,, since her dentures were lost,, she could not chew,, she was diagnosed with difficulty swallowing, needed assist to eat. , but was not helped, no one present when she aspirated, more than one, I had complain many times to have someone assist her.
I don't know how professional staff trained to care for those in need can turn their backs, and still live with themselves.
I know I could not walk away, or not answer a call light.

She would tell us how the aids left her alone with the bell ringing for hours, when they came in they yelled at her roommate and treated her very roughly. My mom told me she would be very cooperative so she would over yelled at. The PT and OT were scattered and didn’t seem to know what the plan or goals were for my Mom. After she couldn’t answer the phone anymore we started calling the nurses for updates every day. If they called back it was hours later and they either didn’t know my mom, hadn’t taken care of her before, or gave us the wrong information. After being neglected for 3 weeks, she was sent to wake med ER with urosepsis. She was dehydrated, electrolytes were terrible, she had bruises and a bedsore and She was in a diaper. She didn’t even know who I was. As it turns out she had a kidney stone that they ignored, or gave her Percocet for to keep her quiet. Sadly, she died a month later. Without a doubt her discomfort in death was hastened by the terrible neglect she got at Sunnybrook

[review] => I have been touring all of the facilities in the Raleigh area for my dear friend who just had her left hip replaced. I found everything I was looking for when I visited Sunnybrook Rehabilitation Center. The Administrator personally toured me through her facility and I was introduced to the Director of Nursing and Rehab Program Manager who were so helpful in answering my questions. I selected this facility for my friend and things just got better and better. She enjoyed her therapy, nursing services and even the nursing assistants were attentive to her every need...but the food was amazing! I found myself purchasing a meal and eating lunch with her several times a week. As a guest to the facility you can't beat the $3.00 meal that is delicious!
While my friend was only there for a few weeks, she wished she could have stayed longer...thank you Sunnybrook Rehabilitation Center for your caring approach in every aspect of my friends care.

[review] => I haven't ever heard a positive thing regarding this facility. Patient neglect,misuse of funds,theft of patients belongings, by staff and or other residents. In quiet a few recent cases,any objection of their fraudulent and neglectful behavior has resulted. In the patients being abruptly kicked out of the facility. The smell is horrendous. This is to name a few of the horrible displays by staff and management of the facility. I wouldn't leave my DOG here.

I have or had a friend who was in this facility. She died there. When visited she had not been given hygiene care at all. I offered to help getting her washed up but the nurse who was supposed to get her aid never came back to let me know if someone would come so we could ge my friend washed up. My only consolation is that she wasn't coherent (my friend), she was in an unconscious state. So hopefully she wasn't aware of how she was being treated. To the Administration: the care given to patients is very Poor. And your facility Stinks.

[review] => I left that rehabilitation facility and could still smell the odor that came from that place. On the surface the facility looks clean but it had an odor, that would come from the lack of hygiene care of the residents.
While I was visiting with my friend I asked one of the staff members to please help me to get my friend washed, she told me she would get the male aide that was responsible for her care. I waited, 30 minutes later she passed by the room with her head down and didn't have the common courtesy to let me know if she had or had not spoken to the CNA responsible for giving my friend care. I had stressed that I would help in getting my friend washed and I would have done it myself.
When I lifted my friends blanket the smell that came from her body was awful, that's hard to conceive in a facility where she's suppose to at least have her hygiene care. I'm sorry to know facilities like this still exist in operation. My friend was unresponsive because if she could have washed herself she would have. It hurt me too see how she's cared for because she use to care for people. As a matter of fact she had her own Family Care Facility.

[review] => This place is absolutely by far the worst rehab place I have ever visited!! The staff is RUDE and they have more excuses for why they can't help a patient. When the shift change it is the most difficult time to find ANY ONE on either shift to provide help. I would never send any one here and as soon as I can find some where else to send my love one believe they will be MOVED. As a person that cares about people regardless if I am on or off the clock I will provide assistance. These employees are clearly only working to get a pay check and a job of this nature should be more than a piece of money! This is a service job where people with genuinely good hearts to help people should work, if you are reading this and you work here, and this is not your feelings do us all a favor and find another career. We leave our love ones here with trust that you will provide the proper care and to know that you allow people to sit in wheel chairs for a long time, not check on people after they have asked for assistance, and to have a nasty attitude with the family members is just ridiculous.

[review] => My grandfather was in this facility for little over thirty days before coming home ,and I was highly disappointed and dissatisfied with the workers as well as the residents not being taken care of the the manner they should have , plenty times I came in my grandfather had been in his room a stroke patient and he would tell me he press the call button for bathroom they come 20-30 minutes later, he had aphasia and the staff was not trained on how to understand things he would want and say, so they would call me for clarification , please train them on things they should know .. the place smelled and I purchased lysol disinfectant spray so that I could clean his room..so I repeat please don't bring your love one here , katiey from therapy was AWESOME.. I loved her and so did my grandfather god rest his soul

My loved one was also promised a private room as soon as one became available and he never got one. There are roaches and crickets in this place. The food they serve the patients is terrible. They fed my loved one a cheese sandwich twice in one day. What kind of place is this to do that? I stayed on top of things and had my loved one released to come home. I was a patient there for 4-weeks and once my bed wasn't made for 4-days, I had to request from a nurse to have an assistant change my linen. At night I seldom was visited by the 11-7 nurse. At 4:00-am most of the time ice-water was left there and many times that was not given. The food many times cold as if it was taken from the refrigerator and several times I took my tray to the kitchen. The place is FILTHY, there was dried blood and feces on the floor, the bed has a metal pole down the middle. My friend called for her pain meds this morning and after waiting 30 mins had to call the front desk on her cellphone just to get any attention. This place should be shut down! At least my friend is awake and has her wits about her - but there are many elderly folk in there who can't and I can only imagine they torment they are living. Why is no health agency or ombudsman doing anything about this facility!? It's a disgrace.

[review] => Those people who are looking for something -- be prepared for frustration. Be prepared if your family member is sick, because people don't want them. Maybe they only want people who can take care of themselves. There is one in particular that I found there was space available, and they don't want my father. This place I am really frustrated with is Sunnybrook because pretty much they've just been giving me the run-around. I have given them all the information that they needed, and then I was told the person that reviews this is really busy and they can't help me right away, so I have to wait.
The place looked nice, but they gave me the run-around. That was a really big frustration since the doctors were giving them information, and they got all the information they needed, and I thought if they had space available why not admit it if you don't want them. They looked like a nice place. They really do, so that is why I was so disappointed. I would rate them like a two really because of how they treat people.`

My grandma was discharged from this facility today. Although I did not visit due to her short time there (1 week) and my work schedule, my mother had visited everyday. Both my mom and grandma had nothing but good things to say. The staff was attentive and caring. Always smiling. I wanted to specifically say that a nurse assistant named Sherri was stellar. Also Carrie , Dwayne and Jerome. Not only is it rare to find a good place like this, but to even find one good employee. Here there were many. Also my grandma couldn't stop talking about the food. Don't let this place fool you by the looks. My mom said that it looks old and that worried her at first. But it was clean and cared for. Just aging. Do consider this hospital. Awesome work everyone!!!
